Another successful Greens Bayou Regatta

Paddlers start down the newly christened Greens Bayou Paddling Trail

The Greens Bayou Coalition began putting on the Greens Bayou Regatta in 2016 to raise awareness for their proposed plan for the TPWD Greens Bayou Paddling Trail and the nonprofit.  The Greens Bayou Regatta is for everyone:  racers can go for a personal best, novices can enjoy a fun, safe paddle in nature, and many of our paddlers also help with a bayou cleanup on their way to the finish line.

Greens Bayou Regatta speed winners are: (1) Fastest Boat: James Sutherland at 1:06:25 (2) Fastest Woman: Donna Kouwe  1:21:09 (3) Fastest Canoe: Felicia Zeigler/Alan Lindsey 1:22:22

Texas Parks & Wildlife, Houston Parks Board and Houston Parks & Recreation Department and all their other partners celebrated the grand opening of the Greens Bayou Paddling Trail as 70+ paddlers started the Annual Greens Bayou Regatta.

This year 21 boats participated in the Styrofoam Cup Challenge (of 46 registered vessels in the Greens Bayou Regatta).  The total weight in floatables collected was 179.66 lbs.  The winner of the coveted Styrofoam Cup was Louis Novak, bringing in 48.74 lbs., with several boats coming very close.

Our Corporate Styrofoam Cup is awarded each year to the vessel that collects the greatest amount of trash!  Created by one of our committee members, the unique, hand-crafted medal is awarded in recognition of the most trash collected.  The Greens Bayou Regatta is becoming well-known for having the “Best Lunch on the Bayou,” at the finish line. Big thanks go to the wonderful sponsors who help us serve up a great party.

About Greens Bayou Regatta Host: Greens Bayou Coalition

Greens Bayou is a beautiful, natural, easy paddle in a very urban area – a hidden jewel. Greens Bayou Coalition works to minimize flood risks, encourage revitalization of native habitats, create recreational opportunities, and foster a broad awareness of the economic potential of the Greens Bayou watershed, so working with our community to add launches and develop the paddling trail fit perfectly with our mission.
